{"id":783,"date":"2008-09-15T16:53:27","date_gmt":"2008-09-16T00:53:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artesianmedia.com\/blog\/2008\/09\/15\/google-android-store-the-mobile-goldrush-is-coming\/"},"modified":"2008-09-15T16:53:27","modified_gmt":"2008-09-16T00:53:27","slug":"google-android-store-the-mobile-goldrush-is-coming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artesianmedia.com\/blog\/google-android-store-the-mobile-goldrush-is-coming\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Android Store: the Mobile Goldrush is Coming&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#39;s going to be interesting to see if the upcoming mobile phone platform\/application war &amp; shakeout will be a repeat of the Apple vs. IBM, or Mac OS vs. Windows wars of the early 80s and early 90s &#8230; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ontogeny\" linkindex=\"3\" set=\"yes\" title=\"Ontogeny\">ontogeny<\/a> recapitulates <a class=\"mw-redirect\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phylogeny\" linkindex=\"4\" set=\"yes\" title=\"Phylogeny\">phylogeny<\/a> and all that, you know&#8230; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Apple has done a tremendous job breaking ground in this area, popularizing the technology with great hardware that works &#8230; well <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wired.com\/gadgets\/2008\/08\/whats-wrong-wit.html\" target=\"_blank\">mostly works<\/a> &#8230; <\/strong>they have put tons of effort into conceptualizing and designing the interface, and <a href=\"http:\/\/hardnewsinc.blogs.com\/.a\/6a00d83428f05153ef010534ac09a4970c-popup\" onclick=\"window.open( this.href, &#39;_blank&#39;, &#39;width=640,height=480,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0&#39; ); return false\" style=\"float: right;\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Google android store\" class=\"at-xid-6a00d83428f05153ef010534ac09a4970c \" src=\"http:\/\/hardnewsinc.blogs.com\/.a\/6a00d83428f05153ef010534ac09a4970c-500wi\" style=\"margin: 0px 0px 5px 5px; width: 391px; height: 594px;\" \/><\/a>creating the paradigm that people actually want to use. <br \/>&#8230;and now that they&#39;ve done the heavy lifting, along comes the more open-source competitor, flinging open the doors of innovation and competition to take the tidy Apple walled garden and turn it into, well, pretty much what the landscape of PC-based applications has looked like for the past 28 years or so.&#160; A loud, rude, complicated, chaotic landscape where everything is much cheaper, does kewl new things that businesses\/people need to have in their lives, and that you have to be half-systems engineer yourself to keep all your various hardware &amp; software all playing nicely together. <\/p>\n<p>To stretch the &quot;walled garden&quot; metaphor a little, <strong>the IBM-PC space, rather than a tidy garden, more resembles a giant sandbox full of toddlers on meth. Only they&#39;re NFL lineman-size. With power tools.<\/strong> <br \/>&#160;<br \/>If the past is to be our guide, the Android and Blueprint somewhat open-source projects are going to start off behind Apple, biting off what Apple does.&#160; And the developers will be relentless.&#160; And the hardware manufacturers will churn out warehouses full of cheap, buggy handsets to run all this on. <\/p>\n<p>And they will gradually erode Apple&#39;s lead in the smartphone\/app space. <\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here&#39;s some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/26674814\/\">interesting quotes from MSNBC: <\/a><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">While Android is an operating system, it is<br \/>\nalso an open-source system similar to Linux, upon which it is based.<br \/>\nThat\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s creating a lot of excitement and interest in the kind of<br \/>\nprograms that will be available for users, including one that can track<br \/>\nfamily members\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 whereabouts in an emergency to another that offers a<br \/>\nshort cooking video, followed by information on nearby grocery stores<br \/>\nthat carry the ingredients needed for the recipe. <\/div>\n<p class=\"textBodyBlack\" style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">Since<br \/>\nits inception, Android has been tweaked and built upon freely by<br \/>\ndevelopers, device designers and wireless carriers who have had<br \/>\ncomplete access to Android\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Software Developer Kit. Basically, Android<br \/>\nis whatever users and developers want it to be. <\/p>\n<p class=\"textBodyBlack\" style=\"margin-left: 40px;\">That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<br \/>\nin contrast to Apple\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s approach with the iPhone.
