The article is &#8220;long as hell,&#8221; but fascinating in that it describes how scientists are starting to focus in on how our inborn moral sense works. <\/p>\n<p>I had mentioned to Dave the experiment that was making the rounds a few years ago, where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spinalcord.org\/news.php?dep=2&#038;page=5&amp;list=1567\">Capuchin Monkeys were tossing aside perfectly good slices of cucumber<\/a> because they had seen another monkey rewarded with grapes.  Which, I mentioned, makes me think of pretty much every collective bargaining session I&#8217;ve ever been involved with. <\/p>\n<p>Anyway. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/01\/13\/magazine\/13Psychology-t.html?_r=1&amp;oref=login\">The NY Times devotes considerable space to this topic. <\/a> A sampling: <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>our heads can be turned by an aura of sanctity, distracting us from a<br \/>\nmore objective reckoning of the actions that make people suffer or<br \/>\nflourish. It seems we may all be vulnerable to moral illusions the<br \/>\nethical equivalent of the bending lines that trick the eye on cereal<br \/>\nboxes and in <a set=\"yes\" linkindex=\"47\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/news\/health\/diseasesconditionsandhealthtopics\/psychology_and_psychologists\/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier\" title=\"Recent and archival health news about psychology.\">psychology<\/a><br \/>\ntextbooks. Illusions are a favorite tool of perception scientists for<br \/>\nexposing the workings of the five senses, and of philosophers for<br \/>\nshaking people out of the na\u00c3\u00afve belief that our minds give us a<br \/>\ntransparent window onto the world (since if our eyes can be fooled by<br \/>\nan illusion, why should we trust them at other times?). Today, a new<br \/>\nfield is using illusions to unmask a sixth sense, the moral sense.<br \/>\nMoral intuitions are being drawn out of people in the lab, on Web sites<br \/>\nand in brain scanners, and are being explained with tools from game<br \/>\ntheory, neuroscience and evolutionary biology.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This one comes courtesy of Dave Mitchell, at the tail end of another wide-ranging conversation.
