{"id":1146,"date":"2006-02-09T16:05:44","date_gmt":"2006-02-10T00:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artesianmedia.com\/blog\/2006\/02\/09\/saved-by-ronnie-part-ii\/"},"modified":"2006-02-09T16:05:44","modified_gmt":"2006-02-10T00:05:44","slug":"saved-by-ronnie-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artesianmedia.com\/blog\/saved-by-ronnie-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Saved by Ronnie &#8211; Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>And here&#8217;s the exciting conclusion to the tale of my encounter with genial old glad-hander Ronald Reagan.&nbsp; I&#8217;ve taken heat since then from people who bring up all the crap that got pulled under Ronnie, who felt that I shouldn&#8217;t have in any way said anything positive about him.&nbsp; Which is a point of view that I understand &#8230; but then again, what&#8217;s that phrase of Hamlet&#8217;s? Something about how &quot;If we were all treated as we deserve, there are none of us that would &#8216;scape flogging.&quot;&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>Then again, some of us *do* deserve more lashes than the others. Here&#8217;s the rest of it: <\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p> While I was debating myself in my head \u00e2\u20ac\u201c do I spit? Kick him in the nards? Get witheringly sarcastic? \u00e2\u20ac\u201c without any real conscious volition on my part, my hand extended and was enveloped in a very warm handshake.&nbsp; Ronnie pumped my hand up and down and I actually found myself smiling back at this guy. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=97,height=130,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/hardnewsinc.blogs.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/obeyauthoritarian.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Obeyauthoritarian\" height=\"134\" alt=\"Obeyauthoritarian\" data-src=\"http:\/\/hardnewsinc.blogs.com\/my_weblog\/images\/obeyauthoritarian.jpg\" width=\"100\" border=\"0\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 100px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 100\/134;FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 5px 5px 0px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/a>  A brief aside: if you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve ever seen the great cult 80s paranoia thriller \u00e2\u20ac\u0153They Live,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allscifi.com\/Topics\/Info_9945.asp\">central proposition<\/a> is that the space aliens don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to invade.&nbsp; They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re already here, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re in charge and their relentless propaganda broadcasts (\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sleep. Sleep. Consume. Conform. Don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think for yourself.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d) have hypnotized the American public.&nbsp; I had always fancied myself as the anti-hero, the type of guy who would never get suckered in by the hype, who would be out in the hills wearing a strategically ripped shirt, hiding behind trees and firing bursts from an automatic weapon at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rnc.org\/\">zombie-like hordes<\/a>.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> But there I was.&nbsp; Shaking the hand of the guy who I had considered to be <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savedisney.com\/\">Evil Incarnate<\/a>, succumbing to his essential friendliness.&nbsp; All the angry words I had ever wanted to say to Reagan \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and there were many, believe me \u00e2\u20ac\u201c melted away and I felt compelled to respond to his puppy-dog enthusiasm with kindness, rather than wrath. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Uh, I was just in the neighborhood, you know, working on a story about (name redacted for legal reasons) up the street.&nbsp; Nothing was happening, I got bored and so I wandered down here to see what\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s up.&nbsp; By the way, you must be getting bored these days too, now that you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve retired, huh?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Reagan barked a genuine laugh, and quipped, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153A lot of people <a onclick=\"window.open(this.href, '_blank', 'width=414,height=318,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\" href=\"http:\/\/hardnewsinc.blogs.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/reaganears_1.gif\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"Reaganears_1\" height=\"115\" alt=\"Reaganears_1\" data-src=\"http:\/\/hardnewsinc.blogs.com\/my_weblog\/images\/reaganears_1.gif\" width=\"150\" border=\"0\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 150px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 150\/115;FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 5px 5px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" \/><\/a>would say that I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been <a href=\"http:\/\/website.lineone.net\/~gsolberg\/8660\/portrait\/Old%20Folks%20At%20Home.jpeg\">retired for a long time now<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> I found myself cracking up.&nbsp; Reagan had a real self-deprecating sense of humor! <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Do you miss it?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I asked, and then realize that that was probably one of the stupidest questions I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve ever asked.&nbsp; I tried to quickly cover up by asking, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Er, uh, I mean obviously, yeah, but uh, what do you miss most about it.&nbsp; You know, being President, and everything.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> I was getting pretty flustered.&nbsp; He still had that presidential aura around him, that invisible energy field that people in exceptional positions all seem to have.&nbsp; Also, my adrenaline was still flowing from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.echoes.com\/rememberaday\/altamont.html\">near-biker-style ass-stomping<\/a> I had just narrowly escaped. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Reagan looked thoughtful and rubbed his chin. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Yeah, I do miss it.&nbsp; Didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t think I would.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d&nbsp; His eyes got a little unfocused.&nbsp; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I guess I miss the feeling that I was doing something really big every day.&nbsp; And the people.&nbsp; Not the big world leaders, Gorbachev and Thatcher and all them \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but just the people.&nbsp; The ordinary Joes. There are a lot of good people out there, you know?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I felt an impulse to blurt out something like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Yeah, and you shit all over their dreams with your tax cuts for the rich and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwcitizen.us\/usa\/voodoo.html\">trickle-down ripoff voodoo Reaganomics<\/a>.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d But that impulse was smothered by the overriding need to be nice to this genial old man. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Reagan looked down at his shoes.&nbsp; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153And you know, I mostly miss the quiet times.&nbsp; Late at night, I could get up and look out the window and see all the big buildings, you know, the monuments.&nbsp; And I would just feel \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d&nbsp; His voice trailed off, as he got lost in memory.&nbsp; If I were unkind, I would say something about perhaps the Alzheimer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s was already setting in, perhaps use the phrase \u00e2\u20ac\u0153doddering old fool.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> But again, Reagan was just this guy who was talking about something that genuinely touched him some place.&nbsp; The guy had heart.&nbsp; Not much in the \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcthinking things through\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 department, but then again, the guy we\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve got in the office these days makes Ronnie look like a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chess.gr\/portraits\/kasparov\/kasparov.html\">chess Grand Master<\/a> who is 27 moves ahead at all times.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153So you couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sleep at night?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I asked, slyly. Before he could frame a reply, possibly coming up with something about how the Presidency\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s responsibilities and worries keep a man up at night, I added, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You know, that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll happen.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Yeah, yeah,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he agreed, sensing that I was going somewhere with this. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You know, when you sleep all day, you know with a big 12 hour nap \u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 sometimes it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s hard to turn around and get the full eight hours when night rolls around,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d I teased. <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> Reagan roared with laughter.&nbsp; He actually slapped his knee (an old vaudeville impulse that some long-ago acting teacher had probably worked hard, and vainly, to drill out of him).&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s right! That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s right!\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he chortled.&nbsp; \u00e2\u20ac\u0153That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a good one.&nbsp; Say, do you want to take my picture?\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"> I thought about it.
